15 Prayers for the Month of September: A Powerful Guide for Believer
My awesome and amazing beloved, before we go one step further into this month, I want to ask you something. Not what you want from God this September, but what your heart looks like as you come to ask Him for it. Psalm 24:3-4 puts it this way: “Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart.” That question was never meant to intimidate you. It was meant to invite you into something deeper than a wish list. It was meant to invite you into relationship.
I say this because so many of us come into a new month asking God to move mountains before we’ve asked Him to move our own hearts first. September is not just a season to receive. It’s a season to be searched, to be purified, to be positioned. So before you pray for what’s next, let’s pray for who you’re becoming while you wait for it. Walk through these fifteen prayers with me slowly. Don’t rush them. Let each one settle in your spirit before you move to the next.
1. A Prayer to Approach God With a Pure Heart
James 4:3 warns us plainly, “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” Before we ask God for anything this month, we ask Him to examine the motive behind the asking.
Father, search me the way David asked You to search him in Psalm 139:23-24. Look into the corners of my heart I don’t even see clearly myself, and show me anything hidden there that doesn’t belong. I don’t want to chase after things this month just because they would make me feel important or powerful. I want what You want for me, nothing more and nothing less. Purify my desires, Lord, so that when I ask, I am asking with a clean heart that truly seeks You.
2. A Prayer Against Pride and the Desire to Be Above Others
1 Peter 5:5 tells us that “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.” Pride is quiet and patient. It rarely announces itself. It just slowly convinces us we deserve more than others around us.
Lord, root out every trace of pride growing in me, even the kind I’ve learned to disguise as ambition or confidence. I don’t want a heart that measures itself against other people’s failures or compares itself to their weaknesses just to feel superior. Teach me true humility this month, the kind Jesus modeled when He knelt down and washed His disciples’ feet. Let me walk low before You so that You can lift me in Your own time and in Your own way.
3. A Prayer for a Heart That Notices the Broken
Matthew 25:40 records Jesus’ words, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” This month, I don’t just want personal breakthrough. I want eyes that see the people around me who need help.
Father, open my eyes to the broken, the overlooked, and the hurting people You place in my path this September. Don’t let me walk past someone in need because I’m too focused on my own plans or too busy chasing my own blessing. Give me a heart like Yours, one that stops for the one person everyone else is too rushed to notice. Let me be someone who reflects Your compassion in a tangible, practical way this month.
4. A Prayer to Reject the Comfort of Common Sin
Romans 6:1-2 asks a piercing question, “Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid.” It is dangerously easy to grow comfortable with something simply because everyone around us has stopped calling it wrong.
Lord, forgive me for the moments I have grown too comfortable with sin in my life, treating it as normal instead of naming it for what it is. I don’t want to settle into patterns that quietly pull me further from You. Give me the courage to confront what needs to change in me this month, even when it’s uncomfortable, even when it costs me something. Restore in me a healthy conviction that keeps me sensitive to Your Spirit rather than numb to sin.
5. A Prayer to Renew My Mind Through Your Word
Romans 12:2 instructs us not to “conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” My thinking needs to shift before my circumstances ever will.
Father, renew my mind this September through Your Word. I confess that so much of how I think and react has been shaped by the world around me rather than by Your truth. Help me to test what I hear and read against Your Word, and to hold onto what is good while letting go of what is not. Transform the way I think, Lord, so that my life naturally begins to look different because my mind has already changed.
6. A Prayer to Trust God With My Future Without Fear
Romans 10:11 promises that “whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.” Uncertainty about the future can quietly steal peace from the present moment if we let it.
Lord, I release my fear of what’s ahead into Your hands. I don’t know everything September will bring, and honestly, I don’t need to know. What I need is to trust the One who already does. Help me to walk forward in faith rather than anxiety, believing that You will never forsake the righteous, as Your Word promises. Steady my heart when uncertainty tries to creep in, and remind me that my future is safer in Your hands than in my own worry.
7. A Prayer to Rest From Fighting and Waiting
Matthew 11:28 offers this gentle invitation, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Some of you reading this are simply tired, tired of fighting, tired of waiting on a promise that hasn’t come yet.
Father, I am weary. I have been fighting battles and waiting on promises that sometimes feel impossible, and I need Your strength to keep going. I bring You my exhaustion honestly, without pretending I have it all together. Renew my strength like You promise in Your Word. Give me rest for my soul, not just rest from activity, but rest from the constant striving. Help me to keep walking, even tired, trusting that You see how far I’ve already come.
8. A Prayer to Hear God’s Voice Clearly
John 16:13 promises that the Spirit of truth “will guide you into all truth.” This month, I don’t want to guess at God’s direction. I want to actually hear Him.
Lord, I need to hear Your voice clearly this September, especially concerning the decisions ahead of me. Speak to me through Your Word, through prayer, through the quiet nudges of Your Spirit, and give me the sensitivity to recognize when it’s You speaking rather than my own thoughts or fears. When You do speak, Father, give me the obedience to act without hesitation, even if what You’re asking doesn’t make complete sense to me yet.
9. A Prayer for Protection From Wrong Voices and False Counsel
Matthew 7:15 warns us to “beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” Not everyone who sounds wise is speaking truth.
Father, protect me this month from wrong relationships, ungodly counsel, and voices that sound convincing but do not align with Your truth. Give me discernment to recognize wolves in sheep’s clothing before they gain influence over my decisions. Surround me instead with people who genuinely point me toward You, who tell me the truth even when it’s hard to hear, and who want what’s best for my walk with You, not what’s convenient for themselves.
10. A Prayer for Nations and Leaders Around the World
1 Timothy 2:1-2 urges us to make “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks… for kings, and for all that are in authority.” September is not just personal. It’s a month to lift our eyes beyond ourselves.
Lord, I lift up the nations of this world before You, the ones in conflict, the ones in crisis, the ones quietly suffering out of the spotlight of the news. I ask You to move behind the scenes in ways only You can, bringing justice where there has been injustice and truth where there has been deception. Raise up leaders after Your own heart in places of authority, and give wisdom to those currently making decisions that affect millions of lives. Let Your hand be upon this world, Father, even in the places it feels forgotten.
11. A Prayer for Innocent People Caught in Conflict
Psalm 33:12 declares, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.” My heart breaks for the innocent people caught in wars and crises they never chose.
Father, I pray for the innocent lives caught in the middle of conflicts happening around the world right now. Protect the children, the families, the elderly, and everyone who did not choose the violence surrounding them. Send comfort to the grieving and provision to the displaced. I ask for peace to break out in places that have known only unrest for far too long, and I trust that You see every single person suffering, even when the world’s attention moves elsewhere.
12. A Prayer Against the Enemy’s Plans Over My Life
2 Chronicles 20:15 reminds us, “the battle is not yours, but God’s.” Whatever plan has been formed against you this month, it was never meant to be fought with your strength alone.
Lord, I bring every plan the enemy has formed against me into the light before You. I refuse to be intimidated by what I see or feel right now. I declare that You are the same God who parted the sea, who delivered Your people when the odds looked impossible, and You have not changed. I ask You to expose and dismantle every scheme working against my peace, my purpose, and my family this month. Give me courage to stand firm, knowing the battle ultimately belongs to You.
13. A Prayer for Strength to Finish the Trial I’m In
James 1:12 promises, “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life.” Some trials don’t end quickly, and that’s exactly when endurance matters most.
Father, give me the strength to finish well the trial I am currently walking through. I won’t pretend it hasn’t worn me down, because it has, but I refuse to quit before I see what You’re working out in it. Fill me with patience where I feel impatient, faith where I feel doubtful, and gentleness where I feel hardened by the struggle. Walk with me through to the end of this, Lord, and let me come out of it more like You than I was going in.
14. A Prayer to Walk in Obedience Even When It’s Costly
1 Samuel 15:22 tells us that “to obey is better than sacrifice.” This month, I don’t just want to know what God is asking of me. I want to actually do it, even when obedience costs me something.
Lord, give me a heart quick to obey You, not just when it’s easy or convenient, but especially when it costs me comfort, approval, or certainty. Show me anywhere I’ve been holding back from something You’ve already asked me to do. Strengthen my will to follow through, and remind me that Your instructions are never meant to limit my life, but to lead me into the fullness of what You have for me.
15. A Prayer of Full Surrender for the Month Ahead
Proverbs 16:3 instructs us to “commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.” We close this list the way we should close every prayer, by placing it all back into His hands.
Father, I surrender this entire month to You. Every plan, every fear, every hope, every unanswered question, I place it all at Your feet. I trust You more than I trust my own understanding of how things should unfold. Establish my thoughts, order my steps, and have Your way in me from the first day of September to the last. Whatever this month holds, let it draw me closer to You, and let my life bring You glory in ways I may not even see until later. I trust You, Lord, completely.
A Word of Testimony
A woman in our ministry once shared that she entered a September carrying quiet resentment toward a family member, something she had never fully dealt with. As she prayed through prayers like the ones above, particularly around purity of heart and obedience, she felt a persistent nudge to reach out and make peace, even though she felt she wasn’t the one in the wrong. She obeyed reluctantly, and the conversation that followed restored a relationship that had been strained for years. She later said the breakthrough she had been asking God for all along was never really about her circumstances changing. It was about her heart changing first. Father, in the name of Jesus, we come before You with open hands and searched hearts. Purify us where we need purifying, strengthen us where we are weary, and guide us where we feel uncertain. We commit this entire month to You, trusting that You are working even in what we cannot yet see. Let our hearts stay soft, our faith stay strong, and our obedience stay quick, so that when this month ends, we can look back and see Your fingerprints on every page of it. In Jesus’ mighty and matchless name we pray. Amen.
